A comment about literal Babylon (to address some points in the article).
The Hanging Gardens were in Nineveh, not Babylon - IIRC Josephus says they were in Babylon for some reason, but he was mistaken.
And yeah, Babylon's walls were one of the wonders of the world. The Ishtar gate itself is a testimony to what the rest of the wall must have looked like in terms of proportion.
